Alfred Box started the Box hoist company in Philadelphia, PA in 1878. Alton Shaw developed the electric overhead crane in 1884 and erected the first building in the Muskegon, MI complex in 1891. In 1928 the two firms merged to form The Shaw-Box Crane and Hoist Company.

Shaw-Box, a world leader in electric and air powered wire rope hoists, top-running trolleys to 100+ tons capacity and top and under-running cranes to 100+ tons and spans to 120+ feet has been solving overhead material handling problems throughout the world for over 123 years.
